What is wellness?

Wellness can be called the quality or state of being healthy, in body and mind It could be the result of a deliberate effort. Wellness can also be an approach to health care that emphasizes on preventing disease and prolonging life rather than treating disease.

This brings us to the best definition of wellness “being a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being”as given by Charles.B. Corbin of Arizona State University.

In a sense wellness becomes a way of life. As it effects our natural condition of well being it would involve recognizing the factors that cause disruption of the natural balance. When the balance is achieved we become optimally alive and vibrant.

Wellness deals with balancing the wheel holistically. It is very individualistic and multidimensional.

The wellness regime begins with recognizing the balance and what disrupts the balance. The food that is taken in, the thoughts that enter the mind. Both can create toxins that need to be flushed out. Emotional factors, communicating efficiency so that no stress is created but encouragement, co-operation and confidence is achieved.

These are conscious choices and have to be achieved by making the right nutrition, social, exercise, and vocational choices.

Health as defined by WHO is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity. Wellness is what leads to health.
