Tourism arrangements for medical travel

Most of the popular medical tourism destinations (India, Thailand, and Singapore) have beautiful tourist attractions that you may wish to visit. Experiencing the delights of a new country and culture can be a wonderful experience for people who do not get to travel out of their home country very often.

If you would like to explore the country it is best you do so before beginning the medical treatment. Since you are traveling predominately to access medical services, it could be difficult to do any exploring once you have completed your treatment as you might be medically advised bed rest in order to recuperate.

Most medical tourism destinations have various outdoor and indoor activities for tourists: sightseeing tours, sports leisure activities and more. Choose an activity that you would enjoy as it will help you relax and take your mind off the impending medical procedures and help calm any pre-treatment anxiety and nervousness that you may feel. Even though the destination will offer a variety of beautiful and exciting attractions, you should get an approval from the doctor who will be treating you to ensure that the activity will not affect the medical procedure scheduled.

Learning about a new culture during medical tourism

Along with visiting a new country, you will be immersing yourself in a completely different culture which you might be very unfamiliar with. Half the fun of exploring a new region is to acquaint yourself with a new culture and novel traditions. Understanding the culture of a region could also help when accessing health services as you will be more culturally competent when interacting with your healthcare providers. Besides just the main tourist attractions, it might be interesting to visit some ‘local’ spots (such as a marketplace or bazaar) to see how the native population interacts with each other.

Learning about a new culture during medical tourism

Alongside learning about another culture, it is important to pick up a few sentences in the native language of the country you will be treated in. Purchasing a pocket language guidebook could be very helpful for you as you interact with locals during tourist activities or with your healthcare providers at the hospital. Learning simple words such as please, thank you and hello could have wondrous results in how you will be treated.

Arranging for accommodation close to the treating facility during medical tourism

It is advisable that you make arrangements for your hotel or accommodation to be as close possible to the treating medical facility. This will help you avoid long journeys to and from any consultations or for the procedure itself. Staying close to the hospital or medical center will help avoid situations like road blocks, processions or traffic congestion. Furthermore, in case you do require any emergency post-operative care or in case any unforeseen complications arise you will be able to get timely assistance if you are close by.

Traveling to another country completely removes you from your comfort zone of home. While medical tourism destinations such as Singapore are one of the safest regions in the world, there are other locations such as India or Thailand that have high rates of crime and political instability. For safety, it is important for you to learn all about safety precautions in your treating country and ensure that your hotel is located in a secure locality. The last thing you should be dealing with when seeking health services in another country is an act of crime, so take as many precautions as possible.

Communication with relatives back home during medical tourism

Communication with your friends and family back home is another aspect of travelling you might want to consider. Your relatives back home will be very curious to know how you are dealing with your host country or any information provided to you by your treating physician. They would also be interested to know how your procedure went and whether you are experiencing any discomfort post-treatment.

So prior to travel, it would be helpful to ensure your communication device offers roaming services so you can use your cell phone abroad. If possible, speak to your mobile network provider about the availability of any international service plans, to ensure maximum savings on your communication. If this arrangement proves too costly, consider purchasing a local sim card for convenience and ease of communication.
