Emergency services need a boost in developing nations

With the rising toll of medical emergencies due to lifestyle change, road accidents and burden of illnesses caused with time and illnesses acquired due to infections, the developing nations are facing maximum tribulation faced by an under-developed and developed country. Delayed evacuation due to increased response time, inefficient communication system, lack of emergency specialists and lack of pre-hospital emergency care are some of the factors which have deformed the entire panorama of emergency services in the developing nations. Timely treatment of life-threatening emergencies is the least prioritized area in these nations.

It is imperative to have EMS as an important wing within the entire healthcare services. In order to reform the existing system, we need to lay emphasis on its major components of response time, care during transportation and care on arrival at health facility. The future can be protected by involving other agencies worldwide and taking more initiatives in enhancing the EMS. Fortunately, experts in global health have started to have a very comprehensive approach towards health issue, especially towards emergency services. The agencies like WHO and UNICEF also emphasize on the importance of triage in emergency departments. The recent initiative by College of Emergency Medical Services, Riyadh in conducting EMS education program has been instrumental in emphasizing the importance of EMS.

The needs and resources of developing nations vary from that of developed nations but learning from their experiences can again be beneficial for them but this is not an end. A continuous effort in strengthening the emergency services is required which can boost our services for reducing fatalities.

DUBAI - The GCC healthcare market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 11 per cent to $43.9 billion by 2015 from an estimated $25.6 billion in 2010, Alpen Capital said in a recent report.

The drivers of this growth will be Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both are projected to be the fastest growing healthcare markets,the investment bank said.

In its GCC Healthcare Report, Alpen Capital said both the outpatient and inpatient markets are expected to account for 82 per cent and 18 per cent, respectively, of the overall market size.

The demand for hospital beds is expected to grow to 93,992 in 2015, an addition of 8,669 beds from 2010, which is in line with the expected supply looking at the number of projects in the pipeline, the report said.

The number of beds remains in line with the current GCC average and below the US and European averages. The gradual improvement of healthcare infrastructure and standards in the GCC along with increasing insurance penetration should see an increase in number of patients opting for treatments locally, thus seeing an increase in demand for hospital beds.

However, shortage of medical personnel is a key concern in GCC. There are limited medical education options in the region and high dependence on expatriates (nearly 40-80 per cent of total workforce in the sector) aggravates the issue. GCC governments continue to spend millions of dollars on healthcare imports each year due to lack of sufficient services. In 2009 alone, the UAE spent $2.0 billion on overseas medical treatment for its nationals.

"However, even with all these factors, the healthcare sector in the GCC continues its upward trend. The sector's near to long-term outlook is promising and GCC governments are committed to undertake measures to address the current challenges," the report noted.

The World Bank estimates the total healthcare spending in GCC countries will reach $60 billion in 2025 from its modest spending of $12 billion currently.

"We estimate demand for healthcare in the region to grow due to a rapidly growing population, rising income levels and increased insurance penetration. The change in disease mix with an increased prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases is also expected to drive per capita spending on healthcare," said Sameena Ahmad, Managing Director at Alpen Capital.

"With soaring healthcare costs and the consequent additional burden on state finances, the GCC governments are actively pursuing reforms and policy measures to promote private sector participation," said Sanjay Vig, Managing Director at Alpen Capital. "The GCC healthcare sector offers attractive opportunities as reforms gather pace and the market opens up further. Underlying demand in GCC's healthcare sector is increasingly attracting private equity investors," said Vig.

The report said demographic factors are likely to be the main driver for healthcare services in GCC. "A rapidly growing and aging population significantly boosts healthcare spending. According to the United Nations, the GCC population is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate or CAGR of 2.2 per cent during 2010-2015 compared to 1.1 per cent globally.

The proportion of obese people in the GCC population is considerably higher than the global average. This has increased the prevalence of chronic diseases and, in turn, boosted demand for healthcare services. Health insurance coverage is likely to expand over the next few years as the GCC governments mandate health insurance, giving a further boost to the healthcare sector in the region.

The report noted that healthcare standards in GCC are constantly improving. Factors such as infant mortality and life expectancy at birth continue to improve. However at the same time, growth in per capita income and a sedentary lifestyle has led to the increase in the incidence of lifestyle lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Healthcare cost in GCC is on the rise due to increasing use of new and advanced technologies. Studies reveal that new medical technologies lift healthcare costs by 38-62 per cent.

Reseach on head and neck cancer patients

Access Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTC:ACCP), announced findings of an independent presentation on MuGard clinical experience. The ongoing research study was conducted by the Oncology and Maxillofacial Departments of the Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, UK. In the study, 20 head and neck cancer patients were prospectively assessed for MuGard efficacy and tolerability, and compared to a historical comparison group of head and neck cancer patients.

MuGard was effective in prevention, delay and management of radiotherapy (RT) and chemo-radiotherapy (C-RT) induced oral mucositis, as well as reducing the need for opiate pain medicine and gastrostomy (feeding tube) use. Patients using MuGard noted a reduction of the severity of both clinically assessed and patient perceived symptoms of oral mucositis, resulting in RTOG scoring (the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group assessment score) falling to half of expected value.

Marked reduction in pain experience during and following treatment, required milder pain medication for shorter periods of time, which has a positive impact on cost and other patient side effects such as drowsiness and constipation. MuGard use allowed patients to maintain oral nutrition and hydration for longer than usually seen, with a significant reduction in the use of supplements and gastrostomy feeding tubes. MuGard was generally well tolerated, and clinicians were supportive of MuGard use based on the clearly evident benefits to the patient seen in the study.
