Intro to Dr Prem's Global Healthcare Guide Book 

In the last three years, I have traveled to 30 countries within the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia to understand healthcare scenarios in each country. The result is obvious that unequal economy, unequal care, unequal health spending and unequal healthcare services bring nothing but unequal challenges for each country.

On the whole, people are healthier, wealthier and live longer today than 30 years ago. There have been significant improvements in access to water, sanitation, communicable diseases and antenatal care. There have never been more resources available for health than now. However, there are other trends that must not be ignored. First, the substantial progress in health over recent decades has been deeply unequal, with convergence towards improved health in a large part of the world, but at the same time, a considerable number of countries are increasingly lagging behind or losing ground, as reported by the World Health Organization.

The healthcare system worldwide is observing significant issues arising from a shift in diseases, an increase of non-communicable and chronic disorders, Baby Boomers and an aging population, a fragmented healthcare system, commercialization of healthcare and increases in the cost of care while countries are facing a shrinking healthcare budget. Moreover, there is very little anticipation and slow response by authorities to tackle such challenges. Many government bodies are engaged in the management of diseases, and are not at all close to the prevention programs, which presents a major problem.

Healthcare System in Costa Rica

A history of commitment to health and social reform has resulted in Costa Rica demonstrating some of the best health outcomes of any country in Latin America.  These outcomes are yielded because of a well-developed publicly funded comprehensive health care system built on the principles of universal coverage and equality.

The public sector is the predominant health care sector in Costa Rica. The healthcare industry statistics state that thirty per cent of the population used the private sector for medical care in 2001 and 24 per cent of doctors worked at least partly in the private sector.

 

Quality of Healthcare in Costa Rica

With three JCI accredited hospitals under its belt, Costa Rica is slowly emerging to be one the finest medical tourism destinations. Foreigners are flocking to Costa Rica as they combine a vacation in a beautiful eco-friendly destination with top quality medical care. Costa Rica has modern hospitals and state-of-the-art clinics which utilize the latest in medical technologies and board-certified surgeons who are trained and certified in North America or Europe.

Healthcare System in Cyprus

The healthcare services in Cyprus are divided into the governmental sector and the private sector, both responsible for the delivery of healthcare in the region.  The public sector provides free or nominal healthcare for those who fall under a certain category (e.g. those who make lower than a certain income or suffer from a chronic disease). For the private sector, individuals using their services have to pay on their own.

 

Quality of Healthcare in Cyprus

The facilities in the private sector are of a very high level. Many private clinics tend to house several specialized physicians where patients can avail excellent healthcare. The facilities in the private sector in Cyprus tend to be well equipped with the latest technology.

The clinical staff is very well qualified, after training abroad in the UK and other English speaking countries. Since English is fluently spoken at many of the medical institution in Cyprus, patients can be relieved of eliminating the language barrier that is frequent in medical tourism destination.
